Conservation

Being located right on the ocean the environment directly around our accommodation is home to some very special creatures.

We have a wide range of birdlife around our property and at night time are often visited by some particularly important nocturnal birds such as the Ruru (Morepork owl) and the Korora (Little Blue Penguin)

Environmental Philosophy:

Our philosophy has always been to co-exist with the native fauna and as a result we have taken it upon ourselves to not only preserve what is currently here but to assist these creatures to continue to live in relative peace around a busy area.

What do we do?

We have built and located a number of nesting boxes for the Blue Penguin. These nocturnal birds frequent the grasses and shrubs between our property and the beach and are often hears nest building and scurrying around after dark. Winter is their breeding and nesting season so we have endeavored to provide welcome homes for nesting pairs.

The Blue Penguin trust based on the West Coast are very active in educating the local population on the habits and requirements of safeguarding this small penguin species. It is through them that we have learned and began to understand the deeper meaning of this iconic bird.
